thirsty or not ?
The volume of drinking water needed by an individual cat each day varies according to its size, the weather and if their diet includes wet food, or is dry food only. Also, diseases like hyperthyroidism, diabetes and kidney disease all substantially increase the need.
If needed, one way to get cats to drink more is to provide running water – in the form of a running tap, or a drinking fountain perhaps – which is naturally enticing to many cats.
india and mylo
We called again on these 2 beauties in Lostock, Bolton, to clip their nails. They are both house cats, so their nails don’t wear down as much as if they played outside.
India and Mylo are 9 years old and are both timid in nature. However, they both obviously remembered their last session and it was noticeable that they weren’t as anxious this time around.
Well done both of you ! Really brave !
feeling the heat ?
Cats don’t feel heat as quickly as we do – for example a paw on an oven ring – so can be burnt before they realise there’s a problem
lovely matty
This sweet little Persian girl has been with her new mum and dad for just around 1 month, and has really settled in well. There’s not too much known about Matty’s past, but she has been through it and has had to have her left eye removed. We think she is about 5 years old, with just 4 teeth remaining.
Matty is allowing mum to comb, but not underneath. We spent time working through her (curly-ish) tummy hair – and were able to tease out all the tangles that had developed, which was pleasing.
Matty was a little grumbly during the session, but afterwards was all purrs and head rubs. She knew what it had been about, and was feeling better about herself already. She settled on the back of the sofa and lazily watched as we set about clearing up.
Following the session, mum Kay from Lytham St Annes, Lancashire told us :
“We think your Service is fantastic. Matty can get angry when she is being groomed, but you managed to keep her calm. We are very pleased with the results – and so is Matty. She is a clean cat anyway, but has certainly been grooming her face more and she’s not scratching like she was, where the tats were bothering her”.
Thanks Kay – and nice to meet you Matty ! So pleased that you’ve found a caring home.
what gorgeous wallpaper …
Now this would really jazz up EssentiallyPurrfect HQ ….!

lovely fudge
Fudge asked us to call to see him again, to clip his nails. This lovely guy is now about 18 years old, and a sweeter fellow you couldn’t meet.
Although Fudge is quite nervous by nature, he’s coped remarkably well with the sessions to date. Last time we saw him he had a full groom as his short hair had become clumpy. Today, he just needed his nails trimming.
Fudge obviously remembered what it was all about, and that really there was nothing to worry about. He sat quietly and calmly on the grooming table whilst we set about clipping his nails. No fuss and such a good boy.
Following the session, mum Sue and dad Michael from Astley, Greater Manchester said :
“You are really good with Fudge. You’re really professional, firm but kind and you make Fudge very much at ease. We really wouldn’t have anyone but you dealing with him. See you soon !”
Lovely to see you again Fudge !
did you know … ?
The third eyelid (otherwise known as nictitating membrance, nictitans or haw) provides an extra layer of eye protection for cats. Beginning at the corner of the eye nearest the nose, the retractable third eyelid can be hidden from view or can extend across the surface of the eye. It can vary from white to light pink in color and lies on top of the eye, but underneath the eyelids. It contains cartilage and a tear-producing gland at its base and can appear reddened when irritated.
cutey cosmo
This young man is 7 years old Cosmo who lives in Southport, Lancashire.
Cosmo’s coat is short and dense – very much like a British Short Hair (BSH). It was Cosmo’s first professional groom and he behaved ever so well on the table. His nails were in need of a good trim as Cosmo is a house cat and therefore they don’t get worn down from day to day activity. In fact, he spends his time sharpening them !
He didn’t bat an eyelid whilst his nails were being clipped, then he was patient as we brushed out his coat. It was in very good condition – no knots or clumps – but was in need of ridding of loose hair.
Following the session, mum Jenny told us :
“Hi Sandra, Cosmo is great thanks. Brilliant service and treatment and can’t fault your approach and would definitely use you again.”
Thanks Jenny ! … and well done Cosmo, such a good boy !
did you know ..?
The tail is an important communication tool for your cat.
Tail held high = Happy
Quivering tail = Mega-happy
End of tail twitch = Mildly annoyed
Lashing around tail = Extremely annoyed
lucky loki
This tiny girl has been given a new lease of life, since she was rescued from the streets where she was found starving. Loki has been in her new home for a couple of months now, and thankfully has come on in leaps and bounds.
Loki is a Persian and we think she’s about 2 years old, although she really is the size of a kitten. She is a sweet and trusting girl, to say we don’t know what she’s been through.
Her coat was extremely thick and matted in places, so it was time to give her a fresh start. Loki lay patiently on the table and wasn’t afraid one bit of the clippers. She didn’t particularly like having her tummy shaved, but she behaved well.
The groom and new coat has given her a new lease of life (although she wouldn’t pose for the camera !).
Straight after the session, she was up and down the living room as though a weight had been lifted off her. She’ll be much more in control now and mum and dad will be able to keep on top of the combing as her hair regrows.
